This project consists of the expansion and renovation of an existing 1915 craftsman bungalow in the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles. The original structure is one hundred years old; as such, it is considered a historic resource. Rather than tear the house down, the owner requested that it be kept and expanded with a contemporary sensibility toward the rear yard. It was important, per the local Specific Plan, that the craftsman character of the existing front elevation remain much the same. Therefore, the main living areas of the proposed renovation are oriented toward the rear yard and swimming pool. Almost all the rear façade is glazed. The large pocket doors can be fully opened to connect the garden with the interior of the house. A recreation room completes this thoughtfully designed environment.
